How To Start An Online Business

If you’re tired of lining someone else’s pockets and sacrificing your health and time with the How To Start An Online Business (1)people you love, then you need to start an online business.

You’re probably thinking, “No Sh*t Sherlock. Well, how do I do that?”

I know. In the blogverse everyone is talking now about how you need to ditch the 9-5 and start an online business. The problem is, when you need a paycheck, a job is the fastest way to put food on your table.  Right?

I get you.  So keep your job or continue being a great stay-at-home mom (SAHM).

Today I’m going to give you my step-by-step approach to starting an online business. And it’ll work for you no matter where you’re at in your life.  You could be a Walmart greeter or Wall Street trader. It doesn’t matter. The steps are the same for the SAHM and the working mom.

Take one step at a time, at your own pace and start creating your online empire.

Step #1:  Determine Your Why

Figure out why you want to start a business.  Yes, I know you want to ditch your job and make gobs of money, but that can’t be your why.  You don’t start a business to make money.  Believe me. I’ve tried. It doesn’t work.  You start a business because you believe in something or there’s something you desperately want to provide to a specific group of people.  Starting a business is an emotional process. You’ve got to be in love with it.

So if you want to be a freelance writer, you need to be passionate about a specific subject matter.  Maybe you want to write about environmental issues because you LOVE to do research about the environmental impact of certain products. That’s passion.  When you figure out your why, you’ll be passionate, and passion will take you infinitely further than your quest for money.

Step #2:  Figure out who gets you.

Next, you’ve got to figure out who gets you. Who are your people?  Your people will be enamored with your passion.  They’ll want to read, watch, or listen to whatever you say. They’ll share your work and recommend you to other people who THEY KNOW will get you too.

Step # 3. Start a Blog

I know. You’re probably thinking you don’t read blogs and you don’t want to write a blog.  Let’s just agree to disagree here.  You need a blog. It can be a video blog, a podcast blog, or a traditionally written blog.  Here’s the reason; you need to build an audience, and this is the number one best way of creating an audience of people who like what you’ve got to say.

You may have heard about ‘list building’ or ‘filling your pipeline.’ Well, in the online world, you can buy and sell anything to anyone, but only the people who get you will buy from you.

By starting a blog, you’ll start attracting the people who get you. Give these people the most amazing free information you can create. The whole point of being in business is to be passionate and to be of service.  Before you ever make a dime, you must serve your people.

Think about it. You love brands and products that are cool, and you’d drop a pretty penny for a product from a company that goes out of its way to make your life or the life of others (via the environment, or schools, or poverty) better; you’d fall over yourself to support them.

Be that company. Offer amazing information for free and keep doing it.

Step #4: Capture Emails

Ok, so for your blog to help you build your list or your pipeline of people who get you, you need to be able to reach out to them. Gone are the days of snail mail marketing. It’s rare for a company to mail you something. Everyone wants your email address.  When people come to your site, you need to capture their email address so that you can keep up with them and let them know when you’re selling something they may dig.

To capture emails, you have to offer something cool.  It’s got to be even better than your normal free information and it has to speak directly to the needs of the people who get you. That’s why it’s important to be passionate and to find the people who get you. Once you know the type of person who’s finding your blog, you need to create something awesome that they’ll love. They

Step #5: Sell Something

Whether you’re selling a service—like writing, coaching, website maintenance—or a product, your business starts to make money when you sell something.  If you want to stick to blogging, you can make money through ads or affiliate marking.  You can also combine selling services, products, and/or ads and affiliate marketing.

Whatever you decide to sell, remember it has to speak directly to a need or a secret desire that these people–the ones who get you— hold.

Servant leadership

Servant leadership is a huge buzz word in corporate life but when you’re an entrepreneur, servant leadership is your life.  Service makes or breaks your business.  You have to be willing to give more than you receive for a while. That may mean you don’t make any money for a year or two. It may mean that your friends or family don’t take your “business” seriously.

Don’t worry.  Take your time and build your business for the right reasons.  If you’re still working full time, keep working.  Build your business on the side.  You can’t rush success and you can’t compare your results to anyone’s expectations —even yours.

Starting a business, especially an online business, is labor of love. If you only take away one thing from this, remember: you’ve got to be passionate about what you’re doing. Your passion will lead you to create the best experience as possible to your potential customers. It’s not always easy.  In fact, it’s a ton of work and the only thing that may keep you going is your passion.
