Do you think your journey toward financial independence will REALLY start once you complete that degree you should have gotten? Were you too young, too idealistic, too inexperienced to pursue the degree that would have made you the real dough?
Well, I totally disagree.
If you have a degree but think you need another degree or if you don’t have a degree and think you need one before you can start your career, read this article. You (probably) don’t NEED another degree before you kick your home-based career into high gear. Here are 5 questions to ask yourself before you start another degree.
1. What do you want to do?
Be honest. How do you want your life (professionally speaking) to change? What is your wildest most unrealistic (yet totally possible) dream for your life? What career would you love to do but can’t quite figure out how to make happen? OR, what career do you already have and love that you want to continue from home, on your own terms? Figure this out and the rest of the work is cake.
2. What skills and experiences do you have?
Regardless of whether you have a degree, you have skills, resources, knowledge, and experiences. List those things, because I know you have them. You may be a great cake baker. You could be an amazing kid costume maker. Maybe you’re a teacher and love to create curriculums or perhaps you just love to pick the perfect outfit for friends and family. Are friends always asking you for help with web design and coding problems or do they come to you for sage advice and to help them decide their next life steps? Let me just go out on a limb and assume that you’ve got skills. Don’t judge them. Just list them.
3. What skills and experiences do you need?
Now, think back to your answer to question #1. What do you ultimately want to do? Make a list of all the skills, resources, experiences, and training you foresee needing to do that job. Do a little research. Ask Dr. Google and do a bit of digging. Make a list of everything you find, including where the courses are offered, when, and how much they cost.
4. What is the gap?
This is the fun part. Compare your lists from questions 2 & 3. Compare the skills you have to the skills you need. What are you missing? Now, except for highly technical skills requiring practical hands-on experience (i.e., medical training or student teaching) you should be able to get those skills without a degree. And, you should be able to find a lot of these skills online. To prove this, move on to question #5.
5. What courses can you take RIGHT now?
Ask Dr. Google, to help you find courses online to fill in the skills you may be missing. What courses can you find online? Make a list. How much do they cost? Include that on the list. How long will they take to complete? Add that to the list. Now, you have a curriculum to help you get from where you are today to where you want to be AND you know exactly how long it will take and how much it will cost.
If you want to go a step further, compare the costs of your on-line curriculum to the cost of another 4-year degree.
So, do you really need that additional degree?
In most cases, probably not.
Now, let me be clear. I’m a huge fan of education. I have a master’s degree. My husband has an MBA, and my sister is pursuing her doctorate. Education is extremely important in my family. So, if you WANT a degree and you have the time and money to pursue a degree, it’s in your best interest to get it. Degrees take you so much further in your career.
However, my point here is that if you’re working a job you can’t stand and you’re waiting (and biding your time) to do what you love until you have the time and money to complete a(nother) degree, you don’t have to wait. You can create a career at home—start an online career—just start your side hustle now. Don’t wait another day.
What should YOU do?
If you can take a few courses, preferably on-line, to help you gain the skills you need to launch a home-based career, then you just saved yourself thousands of dollars in tuition and fees. Even if you don’t already have a 4-year degree, you have skills, talents, and experiences that make you unique. Start your journey toward financial independence now. Prepare yourself to leave the corporate cubicle farm and be your own boss, set your own hours, and do your own thing.
If you WANT to pursue a(nother) degree then do it. Just don’t let the pursuit of the degree delay or stop you from creating a life of independence, freedom, and flexibility with a career at home.
